PSHE & RSE
Personal, Social, Health Education & Sex and Relationships Education
At Alton Park Junior School, we value Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning. To ensure progression, we use the Kapow curriculum and interlink this with our own Character Curriculum, which focuses on supporting pupils’ to develop the key skills needed to be successful in life. Combined, these programmes offer us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.
Additionally, at Alton Park Junior School, we recognise that good relationships are fundamental to our ethos and our success in being a happy, caring and safe school. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is learning about relationships, emotions, looking after ourselves, different families, sex, sexuality and sexual health. We aim for the pupils in our school to acquire the appropriate knowledge and form positive beliefs, values and attitudes. RSE has a key role to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of young people and due to this, RSE is taught as explicit lessons through the PSHE and science curriculums.
Aims of the Personal, Social, Health Education & Sex and Relationships Education
The national curriculum for PSHE aims to ensure that schools teach a broad and balanced curriculum that:

promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school;

prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;

promotes British Values.
Our Intent
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Alton Park Junior School will:

Tenacity - help develop a growth mindset in pupils that translates across the curriculum and gives them the skills to carry this mindset forward later in their lives.
Opportunity - give students the opportunity to look at different topics that relate to their wellbeing (mental, physical, etc). Introduce students to a wide range of concepts as outlined by half-termly units and expose pupils to a variety of opportunities that help them understand the diverse world around them.
Nurture - to develop and foster the life-long skills needed to nurture others across the school and in their lives moving forward.
