Computing
Computing
At Alton Park Junior School, we know how important it is for our children to develop their learning in an engaging way and build skills relevant for their future learning in addition to long-term life skills. Computing features heavily in our day-to-day lives and with this in mind, we use the Kapow curriculum to ensure pupils begin to develop the key knowledge and skills that they need to be successful. The key areas that pupils focus on are: digital literacy, computational thinking, computers and hardware and coding. In addition to these areas, there is a strong focus on helping our pupils to be safe online. Therefore, E-safety is a fundamental element of computing teaching and technology use at Alton Park. We aim to give our pupils the life-skills necessary to embrace and utilise technology in a safe and responsible manner and, as such, each year begins with a focus on this area specifically, with regular revisits and reviews throughout each academic year.
Aims of the Computing Curriculum
The national curriculum for Computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
-
analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
-
evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
-
become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Our Intent
By the end of Year 6, we want all pupils at Alton Park Junior School to:
Aspiration - be equipped with computing vocabulary, knowledge and skills in order to achieve, a minimum of, basic skills to enable them to be computer literate for later life.
Learning - have progressive and coherent computing experiences. Pupils at Alton Park Junior School will be confident and coherent with Computer Science, Digital Literacy and Information Technology and engage in lessons that motivate and build learners’ confidence, both online and when using a range of computing platforms.
Tenacity - access tailored support that assist pupils in overcoming challenges so that they become resilient learners who demonstrate growth mindsets.
Opportunity - apply their knowledge and skills to other areas of their learning and recognise how to keep safe online.
Nurture - enjoy and be confident in the use of computing and recognise how it can support them academically, socially and emotionally.
